MATT BAIN
BIOGRAPHY

Matthew cares deeply about the health and performance of people. He is a passionate and knowledgeable psychology professional. A diverse background affords him an eclectic approach that meets a broad range of populations and needs. Matthew has been an award-winning instructor, a sought-after public speaker, and a compassionate and driven practitioner who values each of the audiences, group or individual, he is given the opportunity to work with. A diverse academic background, with a degree in Recreation Therapy, graduate degrees in Education and Sport & Exercise Psychology, PhD (all but dissertation) in Clinical and Research Psychology, and currently completing a PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology, gives clients and organizations the confidence that needs will be met.

Matthew’s academic interests lie in motivation, personality, and developing a strong narrative for performance, success, and resilience. Having spent 10 years as a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) in the sport of swimming and coaching developmental-aged athletes to National levels, the fascination for how human beings are motivated became a priority. The past 20 years have shown Matthew that the human spirit for performance and furtherance burns brightly; whether it is for a person wanting to break the throws of depression, or the Olympic athlete looking to break-through a personal best. Working with teams and enhancing the mental side of sport and performance has been a passion and love for many years. Speaking with teams and coaches and planning mental training programs has afforded Matthew an opportunity to impart knowledge and observe growth in many different sport and performance populations.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, Matthew is a non-competing triathlete, father of two very spirited young boys, and a married husband to an amazing wife and mother, Jennifer. Jennifer and Matthew travelled to Hawaii to celebrate Matthew’s 40th birthday. The celebration included cycling a 50-mile highway on the island of Maui. An avid cyclist, this was a joyful and soulful moment in his life. His wife Jennifer, perhaps the most mentally tough individual he knows, is the occasional cyclist (but avid runner) who soldiered through the rolling climbs on the Island. Matthew’s topic tonight, “The “Why” to end all “Why’s” was demonstrated by his incredible wife so many times over he cannot count. The photo was taken by his wife after cycling almost 45 miles. She promptly left him there shortly after the photo was taken to proudly complete the 50-mile ride. Coincidently, this was the fastest Jennifer rode for the entire ride…and she promptly beat him to the jeep. Pride. It is always present.
